I still can't believe my mom would be this stupid to let zombies drive the car.  Even if they were going to let them have their car after it's still a stupid idea.   They said they were newly turned, which made sense because they were still logical, but you never really know.  Newly turned zombies are still dangerous, still infected.
It was two ladies, one tall with straight red hair, and another plumper one with curly brown hair.  They acted like they were normal, as if it was another normal day and they were just driving.  But they didn't look normal, they already looked like death.  Their skin was pale and hanging, their eyes were hollow, and they stunk.  What was I supposed to do other than glare at them?
They were everything I grew up hating, and now one stupid zombie, or rather a smarter one in an insane sense, caused an outbreak by infecting a bunch of people.  A mutant zombie and it was created on purpose!  The creator of the so-called "perfect zombie" got infected and killed by a squad that also killed said mutant zombie, but the effects were still there.  There was a literal apocalypse now, just what the world needed.
My mom went to grab a drink from the cup holder and the taller zombies armed moved a bit too close.  Using my reflexes I slapped my mom's arm away, the crazy chick could've bit her.  Then said crazy zombie chick smirked.
"You're serious about this zombie thing aren't you?" the woman said in a nice tone, then she giggled, stupid crazy zombie chick.
"Of course I'm serious and anybody who doesn't take you as a threat is stupid.  You do any funny business I'll shoot you." I snapped at her.  Who did she think she was?  I may not actually have a gun but there's more than one way to kill a zombie.
"Honey, they'll be gone soon just try to relax for now…" My mom was trying to calm me down, it wasn't really working.  I understood we needed a car, after our old one was destroyed by a fire, which a half-turned zombie caused.  It takes a different amount of time for a zombie to turn completely logic –less depending on the person, but they start to do crazy things when they are almost turned, which is generally around a week or so after the initial bite or in some cases a kiss (Isn't that disgusting? Who in their right mind would kiss a zombie?  It makes me want to puke.)
"Don't worry.  We have no interest in biting you or your mom, it actually seems pretty disgusting," it may be a relief, but she said it as if it were an insult.  My stomach ended up turning a bit.
"Oh here we are!" Did I mention the other girl's voice was annoying?  It was so high-pitched it made my ears want to explode.  The car parked and the taller lady handed my mom the keys.  My mom sighed and then I went to sit in the passenger's seat, of course after a proper cleaning of the whole car and everything they touched.  There really is no such thing as too careful in my opinion.   After that my mom went into the driver's seat and shut the door.
"Let's get out of here," she said in a monotone voice, starting the engine.  Then we drove, until we entered the highway.  There was an extremely long process involved in escaping the city.  You had to stay in quarantine for a number of days just to make sure.  They also gave you a bunch of drugs and things.  Plus, it was towards the edge of the city, and we lived towards the middle.  Luckily they gave out free house protecting equipment, but guns and armor were extremely expensive.  So I guess you could sleep at night, if you could ignore the screams outside.
Suddenly, the car stopped.  I looked in front of us to see the road barred by crashed car after crashed car and hordes of zombies.
"Looks like we're heading back," I stated, trying to sound strong, although I felt like my world was crashing down on me.  My mom turned around and started heading back home.  A hopeless feeling hung over the car, settling into our hearts.  When we got home, I secured the windows and doors settling into bed.  Safe in the security of the dark, I cried myself to sleep.
You'd think one of the first things they'd stop during a zombie apocalypse was school, but that wasn't the case at all.  Some people were actually safer at school, it's sad really.  Although, school isn't exactly a perfect system, zombies sometimes do get in.  But they never last long, or live (in an undead sense of the word) long.  Kids, and even teachers, usually kill them.  It's not like it's hard to tell who's a zombie.  They might as well wear a shirt that says "Hi I'm a zombie!  Look at my pale skin and hollow eyes and when I bleed it looks kind of yellow!"
I like to think I'm safe, or at least the bulge of my knife in my back pocket is pretty reassuring.  Nothing could really hurt me, except maybe math, so I walked through the gates of school.  Almost immediately I saw a sight that made me want to throw up.
It was my best friend, and he was covered in makeup.  But there was no denying the death smell that wafted off of him and made me crinkle my nose.  Even through the makeup I could see right through him.  Looks like Charlie went and got himself bit.
"You really think that's gonna fool anyone?" I said in a slightly menacing tone.  How could he come to school when he was possibly a threat to everyone here?  He let out a sigh and cursed under his breath.  His voice still sounded the same.
"Is it really that noticeable?  Or is it just because it's you?"  He asked with a thoughtful expression on his face.  I looked at him from the head down, he didn't really look different.   Sure he looked skinnier than usual and even under skin makeup I could tell he was pale.  I tossed his questions aside and asked my own.
"When'd you get bit?" I asked looking at him again.  He frowned, he was acting like an idiot.  Of course I needed to know these things, what'd he think I'd do?  Toss aside the fact he was a zombie and a possible threat and pretend everything was normal.  Idiot!
"Two nights ago…" he said and pulled up his sleeve.  It was disgusting!  It was all green where the teeth marks were and oozing yellow-red blood.  I stepped back a bit and I was sure I had a disgusted expression on my face.  "Let me explain though!  I thought that if I could pretend I was living normally maybe I could last longer and be sane and kill the bite!"
The only way to stop being a zombie was to starve the infection.  If it couldn't survive inside you, it would die and you'd be free again, but not immune.  Only a small handful of people can do it anyway, when you starve the disease you starve yourself too.  Plus the effects of the disease make you crazy and burn up inside.  They make you hungrier than you have ever felt before, and you basically lose all sanity.  Even water can make the disease stronger, and even the most determined snap.
"You're losing your logic already buddy," I said walking away.  I couldn't believe this was happening, now I had to let go of my best friend.  It was as if the whole world was fading away.  You really didn't even have to get bit to feel the repercussions, huh?
At lunch I stared at the sky, the courtyard was noisy even with far less kids than usual in it.  So I went to my secret place that was surrounded by trees to relax for a while.  The only off thing was that it was far away from class.  I looked up at the sky and saw it was cloudy, making it dark.  Then I heard the bell ring, and started walking.
While I was walking there was this uneasy feeling that I couldn't ignore.  I almost forgot how large the courtyard was until I felt nervous and out in the open walking across it.  There wasn't anyone left in the courtyard.  Letting out a sigh, I started heading for my classroom that was on the far corner until…
I elbowed quickly whatever grabbed me and turned around to stab it.  Of course it was a zombie, I thought as the red-yellow blood oozed out.  After that I tried pulling the gun out, when  I realized that it wasn't in a place that would stop it, and that this zombie was probably so far gone it couldn't feel it.  Once again it grabbed me.  I ducked down quickly and tried to get it off of me.  The next thing I tried was pounding it with my boot.  It slipped off and I maneuvered my arm off of him when he grabbed the arm with my shoe.  I hit its head and it stumbled back, so I went for my other shoe, when I looked back up, someone snapped the zombies neck.
"Charlie?" I asked myself surprised.  I dropped my shoe and looked at him.  Of course I should know that with the infection came strength, but it's still hard to expect.  He looked at me, but his eyes were blank, as if there was a spell over him.  Instinctively I stepped back, and then he shook his head and sunk to the floor.
"What's wrong with me?" he whined, I opened my mouth to answer but he stopped me, "Don't remind me, just go away…"  And I listened.  I walked right past him and his head shot up.  "Oh gosh, tell me I didn't nick your knee.  Tell me I didn't…"  He said in a paranoid voice.
"I'm fine" I reassured the left, walking into class.  I traveled down the hall but then I stopped, realizing I needed to get my shoes.  When I got out there Charlie was gone, so I grabbed my shoes and went back inside, I'll need to get another knife.  Once inside I walked into my classroom and noticed a commotion inside.
"Oh gosh it's her!" one of the girls shrieked and pointed at me, then the whole class turned, wide-eyed.
"Wait… three," another kid said, holding up the same shoe as me.  Someone must've bought the same pair, although my boots were basically a trademark for me since I killed a zombie with them once.  After he said that everyone looked at my shoes confused.
"What happened?" I asked.  Everyone looked hectic.
"Someone killed Shi… and she's was still human.  All they left was this shoe…" the teacher said, and then she looked at me.  Oh no not Shi, she was my only friend I had left.  And now she was gone.  Why would someone kill her?  She was so sweet…
"I still say it's her," another girl said in a snooty voice.  That made me very angry, so I just walked out and shoved my shoes back on.  After that I walked outside and across the courtyard into the girl's safe room.  It was for people who didn't have a home to go to or when it was too dangerous to leave.  Then I walked inside and it took my eyes a second to adjust to the darkness of the purple room.  I shoved the few things I had in there in my backpack then went to leave.  Out of the corner of my eye I saw a gun and grabbed it.
"I'm sure no one will miss this." I said, smiling to myself and taking a bunch of ammo out of a drawer that was full of packs.  I put that in my belt and shoved the ammo in my pocket, walking outside.   Once outside I saw Charlie again, laying his head on the table.  I walked over, feeling I needed to at least say something before I left, and while he was still sane.
"Hey, thanks… thanks for earlier." I said as I walked near the table, but not too close.
"Don't thank me..." he said in a darker tone than I've ever heard him talk before.
"Huh?" I asked, but he sounded really upset.  Something was obviously bothering him, which didn't surprise me.
"I just… don't know what I'm going to do…" he admitted, but he still didn't look up.
"Well first off, stop trying to act normal because things aren't normal.  Next, try to get as far away from civilization as possible, so when you do go insane, there's no one for you to bite.  Don't keep any food on you, but keep a phone so you can call your Mom or something.  So once you're sane again, she can pick you up and you can eat so you can get strong again and not die." I told him.  That was always my plan for the off-chance I got infected, and it was worth it to share it to him.
"Maybe I'll try that," He didn't sound very hopeful.
"Well you better," I started, then my voice became more sinister as I got angry at him for giving up.  "Because if I ever see you as a zombie again, I'm going to kill you."
